Cuba: time is running out

Tactics and Strategies

Horacio Besson

They say there's more time than life. Al menos, At least, Havana thinks so. Today, Guillermo Farinas marking 25 days without eating or drinking anything. Demands the release of 26 political prisoners. Until now it has hit a wall: with a stubborn attitude, the Cuban government does not yield. Instead, he decides, in a kind of silence bordering on autism, wait for the dissident gets tired and leaves his purpose. Or die.

The problem is that the world is watching. A defensive, fights Havana.

Granma tells of a Western media which "owners malicious strive to orchestrate a campaign of counter Fariñas" which thus ensures the daily, "respond to the interests of imperialism against our country." Granma also minimizes the role of Farinas to claim a "major failure of his personality" which translates into aggressive as when he adds, hit a woman grabbed a stick or an elder.

The indifference to the death of Orlando Zapata and now before the Fariñas' hunger strike and the derogatory way of grading, the justice system by other airtight, the monopoly of information and also, it is intended, the reason that prevents opinions different from what authorities say without being branded a counterrevolutionary, all this reflects the narrowness of the Cuban government to defend its own position.

True, the river is rough. Miami, recalcitrant sectors worldwide castrofóbicos become avid fishermen. The problem is that whoever was stirred waters Havana itself.

For further arguments, valid or otherwise, that the Cuban government uses to defend itself and to discredit the criticism that have come up, even if you feel attacked (the condemnation by the European Parliament by the "cruel and avoidable" death of Zapata, for Havana, a "conjure up"), the problem is that another life is at stake. Another life and a whole judicial system is constantly singled out for its deficiency in guaranteeing human rights of the accused.

Havana must grant the application of Fariñas, not because they are beginning to yield or swallow your pride, but show-show-you can listen and rectify. If he dies, the Cuban government have much to lose and little, very little to gain.

But perhaps for that, think Raúl Castro, is no more time than life.
